Walk-on rooflight installation in Kendal

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Kendal is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every walk-on rooflight we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Kendal, the LA9 district and the rest of Cumbria.

Covering LA9 and neighbouring districts

Distance is rarely the deciding factor. A roof in Morecambe, 18 miles from Kendal, gets the same survey, the same written quote and the same fitting process as one in LA9, LA8 and LA7. What changes the price is the job itself: size of unit, roof type, access and lifting. Lancaster, around 19 miles out, is treated the same way.

Buying your own, or letting us supply

A damaged delivery is a frequent snag on fit-only work. Before the day, unpack a walk-on rooflight, photograph it, and tell the seller about any cracks or scuffs, because claims are much easier made early. We will also ask for the model or a link, so we can read the maker's instructions and check the builder's opening size and the upstand height it expects. If everything lines up, we fit it. If not, we explain what needs changing first.

On the day, we cover

  • Drainage around the unit checked so water does not lie on the glass
  • Lifting plan for the unit, including people or gear for the day
  • Perimeter joints sealed and the waterproofing lapped as the maker shows
  • Drainage around the glass — We check how water will drain from the terrace around the unit.
  • Non-fragile is not walk-on — We make sure the unit is genuinely designed for foot traffic.

A typical installation day

Protection comes before tools. Floors, furniture and stairs get covered, and the ceiling below the opening is sheeted to catch dust. Up top, the fitters confirm the opening is square and the upstand or flashing suits what the maker specifies. Fixing follows, then weather-sealing into the membrane, felt or tiles. Only once the roof is tight do they turn to the internal reveal. Time on site for a walk-on rooflight: one to two days, weather permitting.

Planning and building rules in England

Replacing a rooflight in an English home is a controlled fitting: it has to be self-certified by a scheme-registered installer or notified to building control. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so replacements we fit are notified with a building notice, and the new unit has to meet current energy limits. Adding a new one usually means a building regulations application, because joists or rafters are trimmed. On the planning side, most house rooflights are permitted development if they project 0.15 m or less; on a side slope the glass must be obscured and fixed unless the opening part is over 1.7 m above the floor.

Getting a price from photos

Keep it simple. Two or three photos, outside and inside. Approximate sizes. What the roof is made of. Anything awkward about getting up there, such as a conservatory below, a narrow side path or no parking. If you bought the rooflight online, the link or model name. Then your postcode in or around LA9. That is enough for a first price.

Common questions in Kendal

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

Do you make good inside after fitting?

Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.

Can you fit the walk-on rooflight I bought online?

Yes, fit-only is one of our core services. Send the product link or spec, photos of the roof and rough sizes, and we can usually price it from those. Before fitting we check the delivery for damage, which should be reported to the seller, plus the size against the builder's opening and the upstand height. The product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our guarantee covers the fitting.

Send a few photos and your LA9 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
