Trade rooflight fitting in Newport

Plenty of rooflight trouble starts with a tape measure. Units are often sold by the builder's opening, meaning the hole in the roof, rather than the overall external size, and confusing the two leaves you with a frame that does not suit the opening. Before we fit any rooflight in Newport, we measure the opening, the upstand or kerb where there is one, and the finished roof level, then compare them with the maker's drawing. If something is out, you hear about it before the fitting day rather than on it. That single check keeps most jobs like this on track.

Where our fitters travel

Covering Newport means covering the people who live and work there, not a single postcode. We take on domestic and commercial jobs in PO30, PO32 and PO31, and are happy to quote further out in Cowes and Ryde. If your address sits between towns, tell us and we will confirm whether it falls in our normal area or needs travel set out separately on the quote.

Included in the work

  • Supplied units checked against your schedule before fitting
  • Roof lanterns assembled and glazed on your upstand
  • Pitched roof windows fitted with their flashing kits
  • Building control sign-off — We agree with you how building control is handled before fitting.
  • Deliveries and damage — We check delivered units against the schedule before fitting.

A typical installation day

On the day, you need to be in at the start and at the end. In between, the fitters get on with it. They will want the room below cleared where possible, a parking spot if you have one, and somewhere to set the unit down safely. After checking the opening and the upstand or flashing, they fix a rooflight, seal it and finish the inside. Packaging and any old unit leave with them unless the quote says otherwise.

Do you need permission in Newport?

Replacing a rooflight in an English home is a controlled fitting: it has to be self-certified by a scheme-registered installer or notified to building control. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so on trade replacements we agree up front who notifies building control, and the new unit has to meet current energy limits. Adding a new one usually means a building regulations application, because joists or rafters are trimmed. On the planning side, most house rooflights are permitted development if they project 0.15 m or less; on a side slope the glass must be obscured and fixed unless the opening part is over 1.7 m above the floor.

What to send for a quick quote

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, PO30 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in Newport

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

How does payment work?

Payment terms are set out on your written quote before you accept it. Depending on the job, that may mean a deposit, stage payments for larger work, or payment on completion. The contract is with S&K Property Investments and Improvement Ltd, part of the S&K Group. Nothing is added without your agreement: if something unexpected comes up, we discuss it and agree any change before carrying on.

What upstand height and roof pitch does rooflight fitting need?

It depends on the product. Manufacturers usually specify a minimum upstand height above the finished roof surface, and a minimum pitch on the glass so rain runs off. We follow the maker's figures for your unit rather than a rule of thumb. If your existing kerb or roof falls short, we explain the options, such as raising the upstand or choosing a unit with built-in pitch.
