Is your address covered?
Pontypool and the districts around it, NP4, NP44 and NP13, all sit inside our working area. So does the ground between Pontypool and Cwmbran (3 miles), and on towards Risca (7 miles). When a fitting team is booked, their travel is already in the quoted price, so it does not turn up as a surprise line on the final bill.
Included in the work
- Upstands checked for size, height, level and square
- Roof lanterns assembled and glazed on your upstand
- Upstands built by us where you would rather not
- Who weathers the roof — We agree who turns the roof covering up the kerb before we book.
- Building control sign-off — We agree with you how building control is handled before fitting.
What happens on the day
On the day, you need to be in at the start and at the end. In between, the fitters get on with it. They will want the room below cleared where possible, a parking spot if you have one, and somewhere to set the unit down safely. After checking the opening and the upstand or flashing, they fix a rooflight, seal it and finish the inside. Packaging and any old unit leave with them unless the quote says otherwise.
Planning and building rules in Wales
For a Welsh home, start with where the house is. In a conservation area, National Park, AONB or World Heritage Site, a rooflight needs planning permission; outside those, permitted development usually covers one that projects 150 mm or less. Side-facing roof windows within 10.5 m of a boundary must be obscure-glazed and fixed. New openings need building regulations approval, and replacements need a building notice; we are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we agree up front who gives it. We confirm all of this for your address.
Details that speed up your quote
What we cannot see, we have to guess, and guesses make quotes wider. So the more you send, the tighter the price. Useful: shots from the roof or garden, shots from the room underneath, a rough width and length, the roof finish, any access problems, and the product page if you have already ordered. Add the property postcode around NP4 and we will come back with a quote or a survey date.
Common questions in Pontypool
Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?
Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.
How long does fitting take?
Fitting a rooflight into an existing, correctly sized opening is often a day's work. New openings take longer, because joists or rafters need trimming, an upstand or flashing has to be built or fitted, and the inside needs finishing. Large units that need lifting gear, and days lost to rain, can stretch things further. Your written quote gives a realistic estimate for your roof.
Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?
Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.
