Where our fitters travel
Jobs across TQ1, TQ2 and TQ3 are part of our normal cover for Torquay. We are not an office on the high street. Our fitting teams come out to the property from wherever they are working that week. Neighbouring places such as Paignton and Brixham are covered on the same terms, so a house on the edge of town is no harder to book than one in the centre.
What the job includes
- Upstands checked for size, height, level and square
- A short note of anything we found that needs your attention
- Roof lanterns assembled and glazed on your upstand
- Programme and access — We confirm site access, lifting arrangements and working hours before the visit.
- Who weathers the roof — We agree who turns the roof covering up the kerb before we book.
Fitting your rooflight, step by step
Arrive and agree the plan. Sheet the floor and furniture. Set up the ladder, tower or scaffold. Check the opening, the upstand or flashing, and the unit against the paperwork. Fix and pack a rooflight level. Seal it into the roof. Line the reveal or fit the ceiling trim. Clean the glass, clear the waste, and talk you through it. That is the shape of most fitting days, and for this type of job it usually takes half a day to a day per unit.
Planning and building rules in England
Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so on replacements we agree up front who notifies building control.
Details that speed up your quote
Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, TQ1 or nearby, confirms travel.
Common questions in Torquay
Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?
Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.
Do you cover Torquay?
Yes. Fitters travel to addresses in Torquay and the surrounding districts, including TQ1. We do not run an office there; the survey and the fitting happen at your property. A few island and remote postcodes are covered by arrangement; if yours is one, we confirm travel and dates before quoting.
Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?
Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.
