Rooflight replacement in Cumbria

Before any replacement rooflight is fitted in Cumbria, three measurements get checked: the builder's opening, the external size of the unit, and the upstand height above the finished roof, or the batten and tile details on a pitched roof. Get those right and the rest of the job follows. We handle rooflight replacement in every part of Cumbria, with 6 towns listed on the site and the countryside between them covered too.

Towns we list in Cumbria

Coverage in Cumbria works by postcode, not by distance from an office. Give us the full postcode and we will confirm whether it is standard cover, as it is for most of England, or one of the few remote and island areas handled by arrangement. Either way, you get a written quote before any work is booked, with travel included in the price.

What we do on the day

  • Old rooflight or dome unscrewed, lifted out and taken away for disposal
  • Internal reveal made good where the old trim or plaster was damaged
  • New unit bedded, fixed and sealed exactly as its maker shows
  • Dome to glass upgrades — We check that the opening and kerb suit a flat glass unit before quoting a dome-to-glass swap.
  • Inside finishes — We check the condition of the plaster and trim around the opening from inside.

Rules that apply in England

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

Common questions in Cumbria

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Do you make good inside after fitting?

Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.

Can you replace an old dome without redoing the whole roof?

Usually, yes. If the existing kerb is sound, level and tall enough, a new unit can often sit on it with a fresh seal to the roof covering. If the kerb is rotten or too low, we rebuild it and patch the covering around it rather than stripping the whole roof. This is checked at the survey and included in the written quote, so you know the full scope first.
