Rooflight glass replacement in Cirencester

Before ordering new glass for a rooflight in Cirencester, we need to know three things: the exact size and thickness of the existing unit, the glass type it needs to match or improve on, and whether the frame is still sound enough to keep. A charged measuring visit, priced before booking, answers all three. If the frame is fine, a new sealed unit is made and fitted on a second visit. If it is not, we price a full replacement instead.

Covering GL7 and neighbouring districts

Cirencester and the districts around it, GL7, GL6 and GL8, all sit inside our working area. So does the ground between Cirencester and Stroud (10 miles), and on towards Cheltenham (13 miles). When a fitting team is booked, their travel is already in the quoted price, so it does not turn up as a surprise line on the final bill.

Included in the work

  • Measuring visit to size the glass and identify its make-up
  • Joints water tested and the glass cleaned inside and out
  • Frame rebate cleaned and checked for damage, corrosion or failed seals
  • Can the glass come out? — We check whether your rooflight has removable glass or a bonded unit before booking a fitting visit.
  • Condensation or a failed seal — We confirm whether the mist is inside the sealed unit or on the room-side surface.

How the glass is replaced

The second visit is the quick one. With the new unit made to size, the fitters take the old glass out, check the frame and drainage paths, and set the new glass on packers so it sits square and drains properly. Seals and cappings are renewed where needed, the area is cleared, and you are shown what was done.

Planning, building control and Cirencester

Replacing a rooflight in an English home is a controlled fitting: it has to be self-certified by a scheme-registered installer or notified to building control. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so replacements we fit are notified with a building notice, and the new unit has to meet current energy limits. Adding a new one usually means a building regulations application, because joists or rafters are trimmed. On the planning side, most house rooflights are permitted development if they project 0.15 m or less; on a side slope the glass must be obscured and fixed unless the opening part is over 1.7 m above the floor.

What to send us

Photos of the problem glass from inside and out, a rough width and length, and whether the rooflight opens or is fixed are enough to price the first visit. Add the postcode and how the roof is reached, and tell us if more than one unit has misted.

Common questions in Cirencester

Is new glass or a new rooflight better value?

If the frame, gaskets and drainage are sound, new glass is usually the cheaper fix. If the frame is cracked, distorted or leaking at the kerb, a full replacement is better value. After the measuring visit we price both so you can compare.

Can you replace just the glass in my rooflight?

Often, yes. If the frame, gaskets and drainage are sound, a new sealed unit can go into the existing frame. If the frame has failed, is distorted or leaks around the edge, replacing the whole rooflight is usually the better answer, and we tell you that.

Can I upgrade the glass while it is being replaced?

Usually. Solar-control, self-cleaning, toughened or laminated glass can be specified as long as the frame can take the thickness and weight. We check that on the measuring visit and price the options side by side.
