Pitched roof window installation in Portishead

A rooflight is not finished when the roof is watertight. The inside matters too: the reveal or lining around the opening, the plaster, the trim where it meets the ceiling. Some installers leave that for somebody else. When we quote for pitched roof window installation in Portishead, internal finishing is listed so you can see whether it is included or left for your decorator. That way a pitched roof window looks right from the room below as well as from outside. We cover Portishead and properties throughout Somerset.

Covering BS20 and neighbouring districts

Portishead and the districts around it, BS20, BS48 and BS21, all sit inside our working area. So does the ground between Portishead and Nailsea (3 miles), and on towards Clevedon (5 miles). When a fitting team is booked, their travel is already in the quoted price, so it does not turn up as a surprise line on the final bill.

What we check on a supplied unit

A damaged delivery is a frequent snag on fit-only work. Before the day, unpack a pitched roof window, photograph it, and tell the seller about any cracks or scuffs, because claims are much easier made early. We will also ask for the model or a link, so we can read the maker's instructions and check the opening size and the flashing kit it expects. If everything lines up, we fit it. If not, we explain what needs changing first.

What we do on the day

  • Window frame fixed on its brackets, square and at the right height
  • Inside lining fitted and left ready for decoration
  • Flashing kit matched to tiles, slates or a recessed fit
  • Flashing to suit the roof — We match the flashing kit to your roof covering before ordering.
  • Head height and view — We think about how the window will be used from inside before fixing its height.

Fitting your pitched roof window, step by step

Protection comes before tools. Floors, furniture and stairs get covered, and the ceiling below the opening is sheeted to catch dust. Up top, the fitters confirm the opening is square and the upstand or flashing suits what the maker specifies. Fixing follows, then weather-sealing into the membrane, felt or tiles. Only once the roof is tight do they turn to the internal reveal. Time on site for a pitched roof window: one day, weather permitting.

Planning and building rules in England

England's rules in short: permitted development usually covers a rooflight on a house roof provided it doesn't stick out more than 0.15 m or rise above the ridge, though a listed building always needs consent and some streets have Article 4 directions. Building regulations apply to new openings, and replacements go through building control; as we are not registered with a competent person scheme, we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. The energy limit for rooflights in existing homes is 2.2 W/m²K, and the 2026 Approved Document L, in force from 24 March 2027, keeps that figure.

Getting a price from photos

A fast quote needs five things: a photo of the roof from outside, one from the room below, rough sizes of the opening or the space, the roof covering (felt, single-ply, fibreglass, tiles, slate or metal), and a note on access. If you have already bought the unit, add the product link or spec sheet. And give us the postcode, BS20 or a neighbouring district.

Common questions in Portishead

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

Will my new pitched roof window leak?

A correctly fitted unit should not. Leaks usually trace back to the detail around the frame: an upstand that is too low, a membrane or flashing that is not dressed properly, sealant applied to a damp surface, or water ponding against the kerb. We fit to the maker's instructions and check each of those points. The fitting carries a written workmanship guarantee, with its terms set out on your quote.

Tell us your postcode, BS20 or close by, and what you want fitted. We will reply with the next steps and a quote.
