Pitched roof window installation in Uckfield

A rooflight is not finished when the roof is watertight. The inside matters too: the reveal or lining around the opening, the plaster, the trim where it meets the ceiling. Some installers leave that for somebody else. When we quote for pitched roof window installation in Uckfield, internal finishing is listed so you can see whether it is included or left for your decorator. That way a pitched roof window looks right from the room below as well as from outside. We cover Uckfield and properties throughout East Sussex.

Fitting across Uckfield and nearby

Fitters travel to the job, so the address is what counts. In Uckfield that means postcode districts TN22, BN8 and TN6, and the same teams can just as easily take on work in Crowborough, about 7 miles away, or Lewes at roughly 8 miles. Survey and fitting dates are offered according to fitter availability, and travel is built into the quote rather than added later.

Your pitched roof windows or ours

There are two ways to do this. Supply and fit means we source a pitched roof window that suits your roof and install it, so one company answers for both the product choice and the fitting. Fit-only means you buy the unit and we install it. With fit-only, the product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our written guarantee covers the fitting work. Both routes get the same checks on the opening, the upstand and the maker's instructions before anything is fixed.

Included in the work

  • Inside lining fitted and left ready for decoration
  • Insulation collar and vapour layer fitted to stop a cold edge
  • Flashing kit matched to tiles, slates or a recessed fit
  • Energy limit for roof windows — We check the window's published figures against the energy limit for existing homes.
  • Scaffold or not — We look at the roof height and the window position to see whether scaffolding is needed.

What happens on the day

On the day, you need to be in at the start and at the end. In between, the fitters get on with it. They will want the room below cleared where possible, a parking spot if you have one, and somewhere to set the unit down safely. After checking the opening and the upstand or flashing, they fix a pitched roof window, seal it and finish the inside. Packaging and any old unit leave with them unless the quote says otherwise.

Planning and building rules in England

England's rules in short: permitted development usually covers a rooflight on a house roof provided it doesn't stick out more than 0.15 m or rise above the ridge, though a listed building always needs consent and some streets have Article 4 directions. Building regulations apply to new openings, and replacements go through building control; as we are not registered with a competent person scheme, we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. The energy limit for rooflights in existing homes is 2.2 W/m²K, and the 2026 Approved Document L, in force from 24 March 2027, keeps that figure.

Getting a price from photos

A fast quote needs five things: a photo of the roof from outside, one from the room below, rough sizes of the opening or the space, the roof covering (felt, single-ply, fibreglass, tiles, slate or metal), and a note on access. If you have already bought the unit, add the product link or spec sheet. And give us the postcode, TN22 or a neighbouring district.

Common questions in Uckfield

Do you make good inside after fitting?

Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.

Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Uckfield?

Often not. Many rooflights fall under permitted development, provided they do not project beyond the national limit and meet the other conditions that apply in England. Conservation areas, listed buildings and some flats are different and may need consent. Because the rules depend on the property, we confirm what is likely to apply at your address and point you to the planning authority where an application is needed.

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the pitched roof window?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.
