Pitched roof window installation in Newton Abbot

Cut the opening. Trim the joists or rafters. Build the upstand or fit the flashing kit. Fix the unit, seal it, finish the inside. On a new opening, that is the whole job in plain terms, and each step has to be right for the next one to work. We carry out this work in Newton Abbot and across Devon, either installing a unit you have bought or sourcing one for you. You get a written quote with the scope set out, and a written workmanship guarantee on the fitting with its terms on that quote.

Is your address covered?

Distance is rarely the deciding factor. A roof in Torquay, 6 miles from Newton Abbot, gets the same survey, the same written quote and the same fitting process as one in TQ12, TQ2 and TQ14. What changes the price is the job itself: size of unit, roof type, access and lifting. Paignton, around 7 miles out, is treated the same way.

Your pitched roof windows or ours

Which works out better, buying your own or letting us supply? It depends on what you value. Buying your own gives you control of the product and what you pay for it. Letting us supply puts the whole job, unit and fitting, under one written quote. On a customer-supplied unit we still measure it against the opening, look at the upstand, and inspect the condition it arrived in. Warranty on the product sits with whoever sold it, while the fitting carries our own guarantee.

What the job includes

  • Inside lining fitted and left ready for decoration
  • Flashing kit matched to tiles, slates or a recessed fit
  • Rafters trimmed where the window is wider than the gap between them
  • Flashing to suit the roof — We match the flashing kit to your roof covering before ordering.
  • Head height and view — We think about how the window will be used from inside before fixing its height.

A typical installation day

Arrive and agree the plan. Sheet the floor and furniture. Set up the ladder, tower or scaffold. Check the opening, the upstand or flashing, and the unit against the paperwork. Fix and pack a pitched roof window level. Seal it into the roof. Line the reveal or fit the ceiling trim. Clean the glass, clear the waste, and talk you through it. That is the shape of most fitting days, and for this type of job it usually takes one day.

Planning and building rules in England

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

Before you get in touch

Start with your phone. Take a picture of the roof where the unit goes or already sits, then one from inside looking up. Measure what you can, even roughly. Tell us what the roof is covered with and how a fitter would reach it: ladder, garden access or scaffold. Bought it already? Send the link or spec. Add your full postcode, for example in TQ12, and we can price it.

Common questions in Newton Abbot

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the pitched roof window?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.

Can you fit the pitched roof window I bought online?

Yes, fit-only is one of our core services. Send the product link or spec, photos of the roof and rough sizes, and we can usually price it from those. Before fitting we check the delivery for damage, which should be reported to the seller, plus the size against the opening, the flashing kit and the roof pitch. The product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our guarantee covers the fitting.

Will my new pitched roof window leak?

A correctly fitted unit should not. Leaks usually trace back to the detail around the frame: an upstand that is too low, a membrane or flashing that is not dressed properly, sealant applied to a damp surface, or water ponding against the kerb. We fit to the maker's instructions and check each of those points. The fitting carries a written workmanship guarantee, with its terms set out on your quote.
