Roof lantern installation in Clydach

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Clydach is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every roof lantern we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Clydach, the SA6 district and the rest of Swansea & Neath Port Talbot.

Covering SA6 and neighbouring districts

Distance is rarely the deciding factor. A roof in Neath, 4 miles from Clydach, gets the same survey, the same written quote and the same fitting process as one in SA6, SA7 and SA8. What changes the price is the job itself: size of unit, roof type, access and lifting. Swansea, around 5 miles out, is treated the same way.

Your roof lanterns or ours

A damaged delivery is a frequent snag on fit-only work. Before the day, unpack a roof lantern, photograph it, and tell the seller about any cracks or scuffs, because claims are much easier made early. We will also ask for the model or a link, so we can read the maker's instructions and check the builder's opening size and the upstand height it expects. If everything lines up, we fit it. If not, we explain what needs changing first.

What the job includes

  • Roof membrane checked where it meets the lantern frame
  • Caps, end closures and ridge trims fitted and sealed
  • Glass lifted and laid into the frame by hand or with gear
  • Lanterns and planning — We check whether your lantern can go in without a planning application.
  • Heat and glare — We talk through the glass options before you order a large lantern.

Fitting your roof lantern, step by step

Morning first: the team arrives, introduces itself and walks through the job with you. Dust sheets go down in the room below and along the route in. Then the opening and upstand, or the flashing on a pitched roof, are checked against the unit's measurements. A roof lantern goes in, is fixed to the maker's pattern and sealed into the roof covering. Inside, the reveal is finished as quoted. Before leaving, the team clears debris and talks you through what was done. Most jobs of this type take one to two days.

Planning, building control and Clydach

For a Welsh home, start with where the house is. In a conservation area, National Park, AONB or World Heritage Site, a rooflight needs planning permission; outside those, permitted development usually covers one that projects 150 mm or less. Side-facing roof windows within 10.5 m of a boundary must be obscure-glazed and fixed. New openings need building regulations approval, and replacements we fit are notified with a building notice, as we are not registered with a competent person scheme. We confirm all of this for your address.

Before you get in touch

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, SA6 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in Clydach

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the roof lantern?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

Send a few photos and your SA6 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
