Roof lantern installation in Sheffield

Glass is heavy, and bigger units get heavy fast. Fitting a roof lantern in Sheffield means planning how it travels from the delivery vehicle to the roof without chipping an edge or straining a back. Smaller units go up by hand with two fitters. Larger ones may need a hoist, a scaffold loading bay or a crane, and we tell you at quote stage if that applies. Once it is up, the fitting follows the maker's sequence: seat, fix, seal, finish. We take on work like this across South Yorkshire.

Fitting across Sheffield and nearby

Sheffield and the districts around it, S1, S3 and S2, all sit inside our working area. So does the ground between Sheffield and Fulwood (4 miles), and on towards Rotherham (6 miles). When a fitting team is booked, their travel is already in the quoted price, so it does not turn up as a surprise line on the final bill.

Already bought your unit?

There are two ways to do this. Supply and fit means we source a roof lantern that suits your roof and install it, so one company answers for both the product choice and the fitting. Fit-only means you buy the unit and we install it. With fit-only, the product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our written guarantee covers the fitting work. Both routes get the same checks on the opening, the upstand and the maker's instructions before anything is fixed.

On the day, we cover

  • Frame assembled on the kerb in the maker's set order
  • Glass cleaned and packaging cleared from the roof
  • Glass lifted and laid into the frame by hand or with gear
  • Level, not to a fall — We set or check the kerb level unless your lantern's maker says otherwise.
  • Upstand size and tolerance — We check the kerb against the lantern maker's figures before the kit is opened.

From arrival to clean-up

Morning first: the team arrives, introduces itself and walks through the job with you. Dust sheets go down in the room below and along the route in. Then the opening and upstand, or the flashing on a pitched roof, are checked against the unit's measurements. A roof lantern goes in, is fixed to the maker's pattern and sealed into the roof covering. Inside, the reveal is finished as quoted. Before leaving, the team clears debris and talks you through what was done. Most jobs of this type take one to two days.

Do you need permission in Sheffield?

Replacing a rooflight in an English home is a controlled fitting: it has to be self-certified by a scheme-registered installer or notified to building control. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so replacements we fit are notified with a building notice, and the new unit has to meet current energy limits. Adding a new one usually means a building regulations application, because joists or rafters are trimmed. On the planning side, most house rooflights are permitted development if they project 0.15 m or less; on a side slope the glass must be obscured and fixed unless the opening part is over 1.7 m above the floor.

Getting a price from photos

Start with your phone. Take a picture of the roof where the unit goes or already sits, then one from inside looking up. Measure what you can, even roughly. Tell us what the roof is covered with and how a fitter would reach it: ladder, garden access or scaffold. Bought it already? Send the link or spec. Add your full postcode, for example in S1, and we can price it.

Common questions in Sheffield

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

What upstand height and roof pitch does roof lantern fitting need?

It depends on the product. Manufacturers usually specify a minimum upstand height above the finished roof surface, and a minimum pitch on the glass so rain runs off. We follow the maker's figures for your unit rather than a rule of thumb. If your existing kerb or roof falls short, we explain the options, such as raising the upstand or choosing a unit with built-in pitch.

Do you make good inside after fitting?

Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.

Tell us your postcode, S1 or close by, and what you want fitted. We will reply with the next steps and a quote.
