Roof lantern installation in Portsmouth

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Portsmouth is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every roof lantern we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Portsmouth, the PO1 district and the rest of Hampshire.

Fitting across Portsmouth and nearby

Jobs across PO1, PO5 and PO2 are part of our normal cover for Portsmouth. We are not an office on the high street. Our fitting teams come out to the property from wherever they are working that week. Neighbouring places such as Southsea and Gosport are covered on the same terms, so a house on the edge of town is no harder to book than one in the centre.

What we check on a supplied unit

There are two ways to do this. Supply and fit means we source a roof lantern that suits your roof and install it, so one company answers for both the product choice and the fitting. Fit-only means you buy the unit and we install it. With fit-only, the product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our written guarantee covers the fitting work. Both routes get the same checks on the opening, the upstand and the maker's instructions before anything is fixed.

What we do on the day

  • Frame assembled on the kerb in the maker's set order
  • Roof membrane checked where it meets the lantern frame
  • Caps, end closures and ridge trims fitted and sealed
  • Upstand size and tolerance — We check the kerb against the lantern maker's figures before the kit is opened.
  • Following the build order — We assemble lanterns in exactly the sequence the instructions give.

A typical installation day

Morning first: the team arrives, introduces itself and walks through the job with you. Dust sheets go down in the room below and along the route in. Then the opening and upstand, or the flashing on a pitched roof, are checked against the unit's measurements. A roof lantern goes in, is fixed to the maker's pattern and sealed into the roof covering. Inside, the reveal is finished as quoted. Before leaving, the team clears debris and talks you through what was done. Most jobs of this type take one to two days.

Planning, building control and Portsmouth

England's rules in short: permitted development usually covers a rooflight on a house roof provided it doesn't stick out more than 0.15 m or rise above the ridge, though a listed building always needs consent and some streets have Article 4 directions. Building regulations apply to new openings, and replacements go through building control; as we are not registered with a competent person scheme, we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. The energy limit for rooflights in existing homes is 2.2 W/m²K, and the 2026 Approved Document L, in force from 24 March 2027, keeps that figure.

What to send for a quick quote

Keep it simple. Two or three photos, outside and inside. Approximate sizes. What the roof is made of. Anything awkward about getting up there, such as a conservatory below, a narrow side path or no parking. If you bought the rooflight online, the link or model name. Then your postcode in or around PO1. That is enough for a first price.

Common questions in Portsmouth

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.

What upstand height and roof pitch does roof lantern fitting need?

It depends on the product. Manufacturers usually specify a minimum upstand height above the finished roof surface, and a minimum pitch on the glass so rain runs off. We follow the maker's figures for your unit rather than a rule of thumb. If your existing kerb or roof falls short, we explain the options, such as raising the upstand or choosing a unit with built-in pitch.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.
