Roof lantern installation in Stroud

A rooflight is not finished when the roof is watertight. The inside matters too: the reveal or lining around the opening, the plaster, the trim where it meets the ceiling. Some installers leave that for somebody else. When we quote for roof lantern installation in Stroud, internal finishing is listed so you can see whether it is included or left for your decorator. That way a roof lantern looks right from the room below as well as from outside. We cover Stroud and properties throughout Gloucestershire.

Covering GL6 and neighbouring districts

Distance is rarely the deciding factor. A roof in Gloucester, 8 miles from Stroud, gets the same survey, the same written quote and the same fitting process as one in GL6, GL5 and GL10. What changes the price is the job itself: size of unit, roof type, access and lifting. Cirencester, around 10 miles out, is treated the same way.

Already bought your unit?

A damaged delivery is a frequent snag on fit-only work. Before the day, unpack a roof lantern, photograph it, and tell the seller about any cracks or scuffs, because claims are much easier made early. We will also ask for the model or a link, so we can read the maker's instructions and check the builder's opening size and the upstand height it expects. If everything lines up, we fit it. If not, we explain what needs changing first.

Included in the work

  • Frame assembled on the kerb in the maker's set order
  • Roof membrane checked where it meets the lantern frame
  • Upstand checked for size, level and square before the kit is opened
  • Following the build order — We assemble lanterns in exactly the sequence the instructions give.
  • Upstand size and tolerance — We check the kerb against the lantern maker's figures before the kit is opened.

From arrival to clean-up

Protection comes before tools. Floors, furniture and stairs get covered, and the ceiling below the opening is sheeted to catch dust. Up top, the fitters confirm the opening is square and the upstand or flashing suits what the maker specifies. Fixing follows, then weather-sealing into the membrane, felt or tiles. Only once the roof is tight do they turn to the internal reveal. Time on site for a roof lantern: one to two days, weather permitting.

Do you need permission in Stroud?

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

Details that speed up your quote

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, GL6 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in Stroud

Can you fit the roof lantern I bought online?

Yes, fit-only is one of our core services. Send the product link or spec, photos of the roof and rough sizes, and we can usually price it from those. Before fitting we check the delivery for damage, which should be reported to the seller, plus the size against the builder's opening and the upstand height. The product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our guarantee covers the fitting.

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.

What upstand height and roof pitch does roof lantern fitting need?

It depends on the product. Manufacturers usually specify a minimum upstand height above the finished roof surface, and a minimum pitch on the glass so rain runs off. We follow the maker's figures for your unit rather than a rule of thumb. If your existing kerb or roof falls short, we explain the options, such as raising the upstand or choosing a unit with built-in pitch.

Send a few photos and your GL6 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
