New rooflight in an existing roof in Clydach

A rooflight is not finished when the roof is watertight. The inside matters too: the reveal or lining around the opening, the plaster, the trim where it meets the ceiling. Some installers leave that for somebody else. When we quote for new rooflight openings in Clydach, internal finishing is listed so you can see whether it is included or left for your decorator. That way a new rooflight looks right from the room below as well as from outside. We cover Clydach and properties throughout Swansea & Neath Port Talbot.

Where our fitters travel

Covering Clydach means covering the people who live and work there, not a single postcode. We take on domestic and commercial jobs in SA6, SA7 and SA8, and are happy to quote further out in Neath and Swansea. If your address sits between towns, tell us and we will confirm whether it falls in our normal area or needs travel set out separately on the quote.

Fit-only or supply and fit

If you have bought a new rooflight yourself, we check four things before fitting. First, the delivery: open it, look for chips, cracks and bent frames, and report any damage to the seller straight away. Second, the size, measured against the builder's opening rather than the external frame. Third, the upstand height above the finished roof. Fourth, the maker's instructions, which set the fixings and sealing. Product warranty claims go to the seller and maker; our guarantee is for how it was fitted.

On the day, we cover

  • Roof membrane, felt or tiles made good and dressed up the upstand
  • Opening marked out, covering stripped back and the deck cut cleanly
  • Rooflight fitted, sealed and checked for even clearance on every side
  • Cables, pipes and ceiling fittings — We look into the ceiling void for anything in the way of the new opening.
  • Warm or cold roof build-up — We find out whether the roof is insulated above or between the joists before designing the upstand.

How a fitting day runs

Arrive and agree the plan. Sheet the floor and furniture. Set up the ladder, tower or scaffold. Check the opening, the upstand or flashing, and the unit against the paperwork. Fix and pack a new rooflight level. Seal it into the roof. Line the reveal or fit the ceiling trim. Clean the glass, clear the waste, and talk you through it. That is the shape of most fitting days, and for this type of job it usually takes two to three days.

Planning and building rules in Wales

Welsh rules differ from England's in one important way: rooflights lose permitted development rights in conservation areas, National Parks, AONBs and World Heritage Sites. Elsewhere on a house, a rooflight that projects no more than 150 mm and stays below the highest part of the roof is usually fine. Building regulations still apply to new openings, replacements we fit go through a building notice because we are not scheme-registered, and the energy limit for rooflights is 2.2 W/m²K. A new Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027.

Getting a price from photos

Keep it simple. Two or three photos, outside and inside. Approximate sizes. What the roof is made of. Anything awkward about getting up there, such as a conservatory below, a narrow side path or no parking. If you bought the rooflight online, the link or model name. Then your postcode in or around SA6. That is enough for a first price.

Common questions in Clydach

Do you cover Clydach?

Yes. Fitters travel to addresses in Clydach and the surrounding districts, including SA6. We do not run an office there; the survey and the fitting happen at your property. A few island and remote postcodes are covered by arrangement; if yours is one, we confirm travel and dates before quoting.

Will my new rooflight leak?

A correctly fitted unit should not. Leaks usually trace back to the detail around the frame: an upstand that is too low, a membrane or flashing that is not dressed properly, sealant applied to a damp surface, or water ponding against the kerb. We fit to the maker's instructions and check each of those points. The fitting carries a written workmanship guarantee, with its terms set out on your quote.

Can you replace an old dome without redoing the whole roof?

Usually, yes. If the existing kerb is sound, level and tall enough, a new unit can often sit on it with a fresh seal to the roof covering. If the kerb is rotten or too low, we rebuild it and patch the covering around it rather than stripping the whole roof. This is checked at the survey and included in the written quote, so you know the full scope first.
