New rooflight in an existing roof in Speke

Glass is heavy, and bigger units get heavy fast. Fitting a new rooflight in Speke means planning how it travels from the delivery vehicle to the roof without chipping an edge or straining a back. Smaller units go up by hand with two fitters. Larger ones may need a hoist, a scaffold loading bay or a crane, and we tell you at quote stage if that applies. Once it is up, the fitting follows the maker's sequence: seat, fix, seal, finish. We take on work like this across Merseyside.

Fitting across Speke and nearby

Speke and the districts around it, L24, L26 and L25, all sit inside our working area. So does the ground between Speke and Halewood (1 mile), and on towards Garston (2 miles). When a fitting team is booked, their travel is already in the quoted price, so it does not turn up as a surprise line on the final bill.

Already bought your unit?

There are two ways to do this. Supply and fit means we source a new rooflight that suits your roof and install it, so one company answers for both the product choice and the fitting. Fit-only means you buy the unit and we install it. With fit-only, the product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our written guarantee covers the fitting work. Both routes get the same checks on the opening, the upstand and the maker's instructions before anything is fixed.

What the job includes

  • Survey of joist direction, roof build-up, ceiling void and access
  • Opening marked out, covering stripped back and the deck cut cleanly
  • Insulated upstand built square, level and to the maker's height
  • Which way the joists run — We check the direction and size of the joists before fixing the rooflight's position.
  • Cables, pipes and ceiling fittings — We look into the ceiling void for anything in the way of the new opening.

What happens on the day

Protection comes before tools. Floors, furniture and stairs get covered, and the ceiling below the opening is sheeted to catch dust. Up top, the fitters confirm the opening is square and the upstand or flashing suits what the maker specifies. Fixing follows, then weather-sealing into the membrane, felt or tiles. Only once the roof is tight do they turn to the internal reveal. Time on site for a new rooflight: two to three days, weather permitting.

Planning, building control and Speke

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

What to send for a quick quote

What we cannot see, we have to guess, and guesses make quotes wider. So the more you send, the tighter the price. Useful: shots from the roof or garden, shots from the room underneath, a rough width and length, the roof finish, any access problems, and the product page if you have already ordered. Add the property postcode around L24 and we will come back with a quote or a survey date.

Common questions in Speke

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.

Does a rooflight need building regulations approval?

A new opening usually needs building regulations approval. A replacement is a controlled fitting: it must be self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control. We are not registered with a scheme, so replacements we fit are notified to building control with a building notice, and the council's fee is shown on your quote.

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the rooflight?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.
