New rooflight in an existing roof in Prescot

Glass is heavy, and bigger units get heavy fast. Fitting a new rooflight in Prescot means planning how it travels from the delivery vehicle to the roof without chipping an edge or straining a back. Smaller units go up by hand with two fitters. Larger ones may need a hoist, a scaffold loading bay or a crane, and we tell you at quote stage if that applies. Once it is up, the fitting follows the maker's sequence: seat, fix, seal, finish. We take on work like this across Merseyside.

Fitting across Prescot and nearby

Covering Prescot means covering the people who live and work there, not a single postcode. We take on domestic and commercial jobs in L34, L35 and L36, and are happy to quote further out in Huyton and St Helens. If your address sits between towns, tell us and we will confirm whether it falls in our normal area or needs travel set out separately on the quote.

Your rooflights or ours

There are two ways to do this. Supply and fit means we source a new rooflight that suits your roof and install it, so one company answers for both the product choice and the fitting. Fit-only means you buy the unit and we install it. With fit-only, the product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our written guarantee covers the fitting work. Both routes get the same checks on the opening, the upstand and the maker's instructions before anything is fixed.

Included in the work

  • Rooflight fitted, sealed and checked for even clearance on every side
  • Roof membrane, felt or tiles made good and dressed up the upstand
  • Opening marked out, covering stripped back and the deck cut cleanly
  • Planning for your roof — We check whether the new rooflight falls within permitted development for your house and nation.
  • Cables, pipes and ceiling fittings — We look into the ceiling void for anything in the way of the new opening.

Fitting your rooflight, step by step

On the day, you need to be in at the start and at the end. In between, the fitters get on with it. They will want the room below cleared where possible, a parking spot if you have one, and somewhere to set the unit down safely. After checking the opening and the upstand or flashing, they fix a new rooflight, seal it and finish the inside. Packaging and any old unit leave with them unless the quote says otherwise.

Do you need permission in Prescot?

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

Help us quote accurately

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, L34 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in Prescot

Do you make good inside after fitting?

Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Will my new rooflight leak?

A correctly fitted unit should not. Leaks usually trace back to the detail around the frame: an upstand that is too low, a membrane or flashing that is not dressed properly, sealant applied to a damp surface, or water ponding against the kerb. We fit to the maker's instructions and check each of those points. The fitting carries a written workmanship guarantee, with its terms set out on your quote.
