Flat rooflight installation in Stroud

A rooflight is not finished when the roof is watertight. The inside matters too: the reveal or lining around the opening, the plaster, the trim where it meets the ceiling. Some installers leave that for somebody else. When we quote for flat rooflight installation in Stroud, internal finishing is listed so you can see whether it is included or left for your decorator. That way a flat rooflight looks right from the room below as well as from outside. We cover Stroud and properties throughout Gloucestershire.

Coverage in and around Stroud

If you also own a property or a business unit in Gloucester, Cirencester or Cheltenham, that is no problem. We can survey and quote both, and where it suits, line the fitting days up together. Every address is reached by fitters travelling to it from their current jobs, and GL6, GL5 and GL10 sit comfortably within that pattern.

Your flat rooflights or ours

Your unit or ours, the fitting standard is the same. For supply and fit we choose a flat rooflight to suit the roof and price it with the installation. For fit-only we work with what you have, after confirming it arrived undamaged, that it matches the builder's opening, and that the upstand will sit at the height the maker asks for. Report any transit damage to the seller, as the product cover is theirs and the maker's. Our written guarantee applies to the fitting itself.

What the job includes

  • Unit bedded on the specified sealant or tape and screw-fixed
  • Reveal lined and trimmed inside, with the glass left clean
  • Upstand checked or built to the maker's internal and external sizes
  • Pitch of the glass — We make sure the glass will sit at the pitch its maker asks for.
  • Weight of large panes — We check the weight of the unit against how we will get it onto the roof.

A typical installation day

Where a job takes one day, the split is usually structural work first and finishing second. Early on, the fitters cut or prepare the opening, trim where needed and prepare the upstand or flashing. Then a flat rooflight is lifted in, fixed and made weathertight so the roof is sound before anyone moves inside. Plasterboard, trim and filler for the reveal come after. Each evening the work area is swept, and at the end the glass is cleaned and the team talks you through what was done.

Planning and building rules in England

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

Getting a price from photos

Keep it simple. Two or three photos, outside and inside. Approximate sizes. What the roof is made of. Anything awkward about getting up there, such as a conservatory below, a narrow side path or no parking. If you bought the rooflight online, the link or model name. Then your postcode in or around GL6. That is enough for a first price.

Common questions in Stroud

How long does fitting take?

Fitting a flat rooflight into an existing, correctly sized opening is often a day's work. New openings take longer, because joists or rafters need trimming, an upstand or flashing has to be built or fitted, and the inside needs finishing. Large units that need lifting gear, and days lost to rain, can stretch things further. Your written quote gives a realistic estimate for your roof.

Do you offer trade rates for builders and roofers?

We carry out subcontract fitting for builders, roofers, extension companies and commercial contractors. Pricing is per job or per schedule of units, agreed in writing before we start. We can work to your programme, fit on your upstand or build our own, and leave the opening ready for the next trade. Send drawings or a unit schedule and we will come back with a trade quote.

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.
