Fit-only rooflight installation in Trowbridge

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Trowbridge is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every rooflight we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Trowbridge, the BA14 district and the rest of Wiltshire.

Is your address covered?

Looking at a property near Trowbridge but not quite in it? We work across BA14, BA15 and BA13 and outwards to Westbury, Melksham and Bath. Give us the full postcode when you get in touch, because access, parking and the route for a large unit all depend on the exact street. Those details shape the quote for any job around Trowbridge.

What we check on a supplied unit

Which works out better, buying your own or letting us supply? It depends on what you value. Buying your own gives you control of the product and what you pay for it. Letting us supply puts the whole job, unit and fitting, under one written quote. On a customer-supplied unit we still measure it against the opening, look at the upstand, and inspect the condition it arrived in. Warranty on the product sits with whoever sold it, while the fitting carries our own guarantee.

What the job includes

  • Internal reveal trimmed or lined, with the protective film removed at the end
  • Check of the delivered unit, glass, fixings pack and instructions before work starts
  • Opening tested where relevant, packaging taken away and paperwork handed back
  • Upstand height above the roof — We measure how far the upstand stands above the finished roof surface, including any ballast or walkway.
  • Warranty conditions on your unit — We read the warranty terms that came with your rooflight before we fit it.

A typical installation day

Protection comes before tools. Floors, furniture and stairs get covered, and the ceiling below the opening is sheeted to catch dust. Up top, the fitters confirm the opening is square and the upstand or flashing suits what the maker specifies. Fixing follows, then weather-sealing into the membrane, felt or tiles. Only once the roof is tight do they turn to the internal reveal. Time on site for a rooflight: half a day to a day, weather permitting.

Planning and building rules in England

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

What to send for a quick quote

Start with your phone. Take a picture of the roof where the unit goes or already sits, then one from inside looking up. Measure what you can, even roughly. Tell us what the roof is covered with and how a fitter would reach it: ladder, garden access or scaffold. Bought it already? Send the link or spec. Add your full postcode, for example in BA14, and we can price it.

Common questions in Trowbridge

Can you replace an old dome without redoing the whole roof?

Usually, yes. If the existing kerb is sound, level and tall enough, a new unit can often sit on it with a fresh seal to the roof covering. If the kerb is rotten or too low, we rebuild it and patch the covering around it rather than stripping the whole roof. This is checked at the survey and included in the written quote, so you know the full scope first.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Tell us your postcode, BA14 or close by, and what you want fitted. We will reply with the next steps and a quote.
