Dome rooflight replacement in March

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in March is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every dome rooflight we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover March, the PE15 district and the rest of Cambridgeshire.

Guide ranges for supply & fit, per dome; building control notice fee extra on homes in England and Wales. Your price is fixed in a written quote after we have seen photos or surveyed. Scaffold, access towers or a crane are priced separately if the job needs them, and building control fees, where a job needs them, are shown as their own line.

Coverage in and around March

Distance is rarely the deciding factor. A roof in Wisbech, 8 miles from March, gets the same survey, the same written quote and the same fitting process as one in PE15, PE16 and PE13. What changes the price is the job itself: size of unit, roof type, access and lifting. Ely, around 13 miles out, is treated the same way.

Fit-only or supply and fit

Your unit or ours, the fitting standard is the same. For supply and fit we choose a dome rooflight to suit the roof and price it with the installation. For fit-only we work with what you have, after confirming it arrived undamaged, that it matches the builder's opening, and that the upstand will sit at the height the maker asks for. Report any transit damage to the seller, as the product cover is theirs and the maker's. Our written guarantee applies to the fitting itself.

What we do on the day

  • Adaptor or packing fitted where the old kerb needs it
  • Old dome unscrewed, lifted off and taken away
  • Kerb checked for rot, size and height before the new unit goes on
  • Multi-skin domes and energy — We fit multi-skin domes rather than single-skin ones as replacements.
  • Upgrading to glass — We check whether the kerb suits a glass unit before recommending one.

What happens on the day

On the day, you need to be in at the start and at the end. In between, the fitters get on with it. They will want the room below cleared where possible, a parking spot if you have one, and somewhere to set the unit down safely. After checking the opening and the upstand or flashing, they fix a dome rooflight, seal it and finish the inside. Packaging and any old unit leave with them unless the quote says otherwise.

Do you need permission in March?

England's rules in short: permitted development usually covers a rooflight on a house roof provided it doesn't stick out more than 0.15 m or rise above the ridge, though a listed building always needs consent and some streets have Article 4 directions. Building regulations apply to new openings, and replacements go through building control; as we are not registered with a competent person scheme, we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. The energy limit for rooflights in existing homes is 2.2 W/m²K, and the 2026 Approved Document L, in force from 24 March 2027, keeps that figure.

Getting a price from photos

For fit-only work, the product details matter most: the link, the spec sheet, or a photo of the label on the box. Alongside that, send pictures of the roof and the ceiling below, approximate opening sizes, the type of roof covering, and how someone would get onto the roof. For supply and fit, the same photos and sizes do the job. Finish with your postcode, such as PE15.

Common questions in March

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Do you cover March?

Yes. Fitters travel to addresses in March and the surrounding districts, including PE15. We do not run an office there; the survey and the fitting happen at your property. A few island and remote postcodes are covered by arrangement; if yours is one, we confirm travel and dates before quoting.

Can you replace an old dome without redoing the whole roof?

Usually, yes. If the existing kerb is sound, level and tall enough, a new unit can often sit on it with a fresh seal to the roof covering. If the kerb is rotten or too low, we rebuild it and patch the covering around it rather than stripping the whole roof. This is checked at the survey and included in the written quote, so you know the full scope first.
