Dome rooflight replacement in Cambridge

If the dome rooflight on your roof now is misted, discoloured, cracked or letting water in, replacing it is often simpler than people expect. The old unit comes out, we inspect the kerb or frame underneath, and we decide with you whether it can be reused or needs rebuilding. Then the new one goes in, sealed to the roof covering and finished inside. We handle this kind of dome rooflight replacement in Cambridge and nearby, alongside new openings and fit-only work. Postcode CB2 and its neighbours are all within our cover.

Coverage in and around Cambridge

Cambridge and the districts around it, CB2, CB4 and CB1, all sit inside our working area. So does the ground between Cambridge and Royston (12 miles), and on towards St Ives (12 miles). When a fitting team is booked, their travel is already in the quoted price, so it does not turn up as a surprise line on the final bill.

Fit-only or supply and fit

Your unit or ours, the fitting standard is the same. For supply and fit we choose a dome rooflight to suit the roof and price it with the installation. For fit-only we work with what you have, after confirming it arrived undamaged, that it matches the builder's opening, and that the upstand will sit at the height the maker asks for. Report any transit damage to the seller, as the product cover is theirs and the maker's. Our written guarantee applies to the fitting itself.

Included in the work

  • Inside checked for drips and the trim refitted
  • Old dome unscrewed, lifted off and taken away
  • New multi-skin dome or glass unit fixed and sealed
  • Fragile dome safety — We treat old domes as fragile at all times.
  • Kerb size and adaptors — We measure every kerb against the new dome's sizes.

From arrival to clean-up

Fitting days start with a look at the sky. If rain is due, the order of work changes so the roof is never left open to it. A typical day for a dome rooflight runs like this: set up access, protect the room, open up the roof or prepare the existing kerb or frame, check sizes, fix, seal, then finish inside. On jobs that take more than a day, the opening is weather-sealed overnight. The last hour goes on tidying, waste removal and a walk-round with you.

Planning and building rules in England

Replacing a rooflight in an English home is a controlled fitting: it has to be self-certified by a scheme-registered installer or notified to building control. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so replacements we fit are notified with a building notice, and the new unit has to meet current energy limits. Adding a new one usually means a building regulations application, because joists or rafters are trimmed. On the planning side, most house rooflights are permitted development if they project 0.15 m or less; on a side slope the glass must be obscured and fixed unless the opening part is over 1.7 m above the floor.

Help us quote accurately

For fit-only work, the product details matter most: the link, the spec sheet, or a photo of the label on the box. Alongside that, send pictures of the roof and the ceiling below, approximate opening sizes, the type of roof covering, and how someone would get onto the roof. For supply and fit, the same photos and sizes do the job. Finish with your postcode, such as CB2.

Common questions in Cambridge

Do you cover Cambridge?

Yes. Fitters travel to addresses in Cambridge and the surrounding districts, including CB2. We do not run an office there; the survey and the fitting happen at your property. A few island and remote postcodes are covered by arrangement; if yours is one, we confirm travel and dates before quoting.

Can you replace an old dome without redoing the whole roof?

Usually, yes. If the existing kerb is sound, level and tall enough, a new unit can often sit on it with a fresh seal to the roof covering. If the kerb is rotten or too low, we rebuild it and patch the covering around it rather than stripping the whole roof. This is checked at the survey and included in the written quote, so you know the full scope first.

Do you offer trade rates for builders and roofers?

We carry out subcontract fitting for builders, roofers, extension companies and commercial contractors. Pricing is per job or per schedule of units, agreed in writing before we start. We can work to your programme, fit on your upstand or build our own, and leave the opening ready for the next trade. Send drawings or a unit schedule and we will come back with a trade quote.

Send a few photos and your CB2 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
